A big thank you to everyone who made it to our 2015 Rhône tasting. We hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did. For those who couldn’t make it, the consensus seemed to be that the vintage does indeed live up to the glowing reports that have been produced by various wine critics.
The Northern Rhône wines were intense and concentrated with an acidity that added freshness and tension. The Southern wines were silky, juicy and full yet still balanced . Wines from both regions showed lovely ripe fruit accompanied by a lively acidity that seems to be a hallmark of the vintage. Tannins were surprisingly well integrated which bodes well for this vintage drinking well throughout its life.
It is definitely worth noting that extremely enjoyable wines were made at all price levels and there are some superb values to be picked up. Even at the very top end, prices compare extremely favourably with the equivalent quality from Bordeaux and Burgundy.
This is a great vintage that we believe is at the same level of quality as 2010, 2009 and perhaps 2005 as well. Some growers have even compared it to the magnificent 1961 and 1947. We believe that it certainly deserves a place in your cellar .
Below are some of our Northern Rhône favourites from the tasting, which we’ll follow up next week with our picks from the South:
Northern Rhône Whites:
Viognier Contours de Deponcins, Francois Villard £78.00 per 6x75cl – fantastic value Viognier from vineyards just outside of the Condrieu appellation. Delicate and fresh with apricot notes and great finish.
St Joseph Mairlant, Francois Villard £95.00 per 6x75cl – Rich, spicy with a lovely weight on the palate. This is rather lovely already and will only improve
Condrieu l’Octroi, Pierre Gaillard £150.00 per 6x75cl – A real stunner and Gaillard’s best white. Ripe apricot fruit with a honeyed note. Silky, rich and long and with a minerality and an acidity that keeps it in balance. Tightly coiled at the moment but will be fantastic with a little time.
Northern Rhone Reds:
Crozes Hermitage Comme une Evidence, Francois Villard £74.00 per 6x75cl – demonstrating perfectly that this vintage is great at all levels, this is lively, fresh and already extremely appealing.
St Joseph, Domaine Aleofane, Natacha Chave £75.00 per 6x75cl – no new oak on this, it is all about fresh, ripe fruit with notes of blackberry and a touch of spice to the fore. Elegant, restrained and powerful with a very long finish, we think this is Natacha’s best wine yet
St Joseph Clos du Cuminaille, Pierre Gaillard £83.00 per 6x75cl – Ripe dark fruit, extremely fine tannin and a long finish, this is pure, elegant St Joseph that will be at its best from about 2019
Syrah Vin de France, Seul en Scene, Francois Villard £120.00 per 6x75cl – fascinating wine from an interesting project (see the offer for full details), this showed soft, dark fruit with an intriguing savoury note. Loads of character and this should be a stunner with a couple of years in bottle
Cornas Le Jouvet, Francois Villard £134.00 per 6x75cl – a touch restrained on the nose but opens with some air to reveal juicy black cherry fruit with some floral notes. Integrated, silky tannin suggests that this will be drinking from about 2021 – realtively early for Cornas!
Cote Rotie, Pierre Gaillard £150.00 per 6x75cl – Very aromatic on the nose and extremely elegant on the palate. This is a more Burgundian style of Cote-Rotie and is all about finesse and delicacy but is not without weight and concentration.
Cote Rotie Le Gallet Blanc, Francois Villard £ 178.00 per 6x75cl – Serious and complex with meaty, dark fruit and silky, elegant tannin. Concentrated, deep fruit, mineral notes and a balancing freshness make this one of our wines of the vintage
We have worked hard to get all our suppliers to offer their wines in cases of 6x75cl this year and we are pleased to say that with the exception of Clos du Caillou, we have been successful.
As always for En Primeur, the wines are offered in bond without duty and VAT (which will be payable on release from bond once the wines are available). We will be shipping the whites in the Spring of 2017 and the reds in the Autumn. We will notify you once they arrive.
Payment is required on confirmation of your order and we can accep tbank transfer or cheque – unfortunately we cannot accept credit or debit cards for en primeur purchases.
